  • SEVEN GRAMS selected at Sundance Film Festival 2022 in the category “New Frontier”

We are proud to announce that our project Seven Grams has been selected for the Sundance Film Festival 2022 in the category of New Frontier (North American Premiere).

This category offers a powerful and bold selection of different projects and performances that make use of immersive technology to embrace the next era of digital storytelling.

Directed by Karim Ben Khelifa and coproduced by Lucid realities, France Télévisions, POV and Think Film, with the support of CNC and Occitanie region, Seven Grams aims to present the hidden ethical issues behind the production of personal electronical devices (smartphones, computers, etc.) and how this production relies on the exploitation of mineral extraction, process which affects physically and mentally many inhabitants of the Democratic Republic of Congo, who must deal with extremely bad working conditions.

The Project, thanks to the technology of augmented reality, dives the viewer into the reality and the process of the hidden costs of our electronical devices. This ethical issue is also presented through a short animated movie illustrated and co-directed by TT Hernandez, which tells the story of Chance, a young man that has lived and survived the brutally experience of working for the mineral resource extraction.

  • Endodrome at the LUMA Foundation in Arles

ENDODROME is the first virtual reality artwork by the artist Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster.

This immersive installation for three participants uses virtual reality to explore notions of space, alternative states of consciousness and interiority. Immersed in a monochromatic and hypnotic VR environment, the spectators fall into an abstract visual space where they are invited to interact with brightly colored fields through their eyes, breathing or voice.

The work, which looks like a postmodern spiritism session, is inspired by the artist’s experience of cognitive trance generated by sound and is accompanied by a sound creation made by the writer, ethno-musicologist and specialist in Mongolian shamanism, Corine Sombrun.

Produced by Lucid Realities with the support of HTC VIVE Arts, in partnership with Novelab Studio, and launched in 2019 as part of the 58th Venice Art Biennale, ENDODROME is part of the LUMA Foundation / Maja Hoffmann (Switzerland) collection and is currently on display on the second floor of the LUMA Tower in Arles.

Practical information is available on the LUMA Arles website here.

  • THE STARRY SAND BEACH in competition at the 78th Venice International Film Festival

We are extremely excited and honored to announce that The Starry Sand Beach, by Nina Barbier & Hsin-Chien Huang, is selected in Competition at Venice VR Expanded. The project is produced by Lucid realities and the Natural History Museum.

The Starry Sand Beach is a VR scientific fairy tale about the starry grains of sand found on multiple beaches across the East China Sea, and the legend that surrounds them. The experience is divided into three parts: the legend, the underwater forest and the exploration of the Earth’s ancient geological memory. All throughout the experience and along with the foraminifera, you witness signs of the many threats to the marine and coral microorganisms, embodied by a sea serpent symbolizing the acidification of the oceans.

For the 78th Venice International Film Festival, Venice VR Expanded will occur online, between the 1st and 19th September, 2021, with a part on site for accredited festival guests at the Palazzo del Casino in Venezia during the duration of the festival.

This year, the president is the director Michelle Kranot, winner of the Grand Jury Prize 2020 for Best VR Immersive Work for The Hangman at home, an outstanding experience distributed by Lucid Realities. You will find VR accreditations on the website of the Biennale here.

  • Lucid Realities | museum distribution market

When producer Chloé Jarry launched the Paris-based XR studio Lucid Realities, she wanted to open an immersive experience production company structured with a distribution component as well.

“If we want to continue producing, we have to be able to distribute,” Jarry tells Variety. “Festivals are obviously extremely important, but they attract a limited and often self-selecting public of people already in this world. Fixed cultural venues, on the other hand, could be promising homes where VR experiences can exist in the longer term.”

Jarry learned from experience. In 2017, she executive produced Karim Ben Khelifa’s “The Enemy,” an ambitious AR/VR installation that called for up to 20 participants and 350 yards of floorspace. Finding as much wasn’t so easy, so when the project’s festival acclaim starting drawing the attention of other cultural actors, Jarry had a eureka moment.

“I saw that museums had a lot of potential in terms of VR distribution,” she explains. “Museums are already cultural institutions, and already benefit from mediation and space; people go to learn, discover, and try and experience new things. All of that could be very relevant for the VR industry.”

And so, when she founded Lucid Realities (a part of France’s CLPB Media Group) in 2018, she did so with the express interest of paving new inroads within the museum exhibition market.

“We’re looking to create a network of museums,” says Jarry. “We offer training and pedagogical tools, we offer a catalog of titles created with their capacities in mind and that can complement the other works in their collections.”

“The idea is to replicate the audiovisual model,” adds Alexandre Roux, Lucid Realities’ head of distribution. “We want construct a durable business model. We sell broadcast rights to cultural institutions and accompany them in setting up the space.”

“We often push them to monetize these spaces,” Roux continues. “That’s very important. First, the public is ready to pay, and second, these installations can be very costly. Charging admission is a way to solidify this market for the long term, and, of course, to ensure a return on investment.”

Looking forward, the Lucid Realities team hopes to bring on initial broadcasters and exhibitors as co-production partners. At NewImages this year, the studio presented “When She Gets Out…”, an AR experiences directed by Gordon and Marie Sellier and co-produced with Paris’ Musée d’Orsay that follows the girl from Edgar Degas’ “Little Dancer of Fourteen Years” as she breaks free of her pedestal and moves through the museum and its various works.

“French museums like the Musée d’Orsay have an international brand,” says Roux. “Harnessing that brand can then allow us to more easily distribute these projects all around the world.”

  • Lucid Realities is thrilled to present four programs at the upcoming NewImages Festival

For general public and for professionals, on site (in the heart of Paris) or remotely (from all over the world), the 4th edition of NewImages Festival – with the support of the Africa2020 Season – keeps exploring new frontiers and imaginary worlds, challenging tomorrow’s experiences and storytelling and making the best of immersive creation accessible for everyone. • Lady Sapiens presented at the SXSW PanelPicker 2021

The Lady Sapiens’ Project has been selected to be part of the South by Southwest PanelPicker 2021

Lady Sapiens is a multi-faceted project is a collaboration between Little Big Story and France Television, producers of the documentary film Lady Sapiens, and Ubisoft, creator of the prehistoric video game Far Cry Primal. Teaming up with scientists, they created a transmedia program: a full-length documentary on prime-time TV, a VR adventure, an educational short film and an exhibition, that tell you a different story of mankind. Welcome to the Paleolithic Age!

Teaming up with scientists, they created a transmedia program: a full-length documentary on prime-time TV co-written by Thomas Cirotteau and Jacques Malaterre, a VR adventure directed by Camille Duvelleroy, an educational short film and an exhibition, that tell you a different story of mankind.

Launched in 2007, the PanelPicker is the official SXSW user-generated session proposal platform. After a selection made by the SXSW advisory board, the staff, and the community, 230 conferences were selected, and assigned to seven categories, which shaped the SXSW programming for 2021 SXSW Online, a digital event experience from March 16-20, 2021. Among those numerous conferences, “Lady Sapiens : Breaking Paleolithic stereotypes”, organized by Melanie de Riberolles, New Business Director at Ubisoft.

Under the category of “Transforming the Entertainment Landscape”, the conference welcomed Deborah Papiernik, Senior VP of the New Business and Strategic Alliances at Ubisoft, Sophie Perrault, from Little Big Story, and producer of Lady Sapiens, Jeanne Marchalot, Head of the Storytelling Research Department at France Televisions, and Aurélie Clemente-Ruiz, Head of Exhibitions department at l’Institut du Monde Arabe.

“What image do we have today of the prehistoric woman? Nurturer, harvester, submissive woman? Recent studies show she was much more than that. Aided by immersive technologies, archeologists are shaking up the old clichés. Lady Sapiens takes you back 30,000 years to discover her true face: artist, huntress, healer, clan leader…”

During this conference, the speakers will cover the unique immersive qualities of VR help users experiment History in a new light and question their preconceived notions.

Sharing their experience working around this project, they hope to teach their audience about filming “inside” a video game, and how a mature game can have a second life as an educational and cultural media. Finally, the conference hoped at getting its audience inspired by an exemplary project in breaking boundaries between sectors, to enrich one another with more impactful and meaningful content.
